Dry skin occurs when the skin produces insufficient oil (sebum), resulting in roughness, flakiness, and a compromised moisture barrier. Unlike dehydrated skin, which stems from a lack of water, dry skin is a skin type associated with reduced lipid content. It often presents with symptoms such as tightness, itching, flaking, and, in more severe cases, cracking.

Common triggers include cold weather, low humidity, sun exposure, harsh soaps, over-cleansing, and prolonged hot showers. With age, the skin’s natural oil production declines, increasing susceptibility to dryness. Certain medications and individual predispositions may also contribute.

Effective management of dry skin requires both skincare adjustments and supportive interventions. Using gentle, non-stripping cleansers helps preserve natural oils, while moisturisers that combine emollients (to smooth and soften), occlusives (to prevent water loss), and humectants (to attract moisture) are key to restoring hydration.

Supporting the skin microbiome, the community of beneficial microorganisms on the skin’s surface, is also essential. A balanced microbiome reinforces the skin barrier, helps reduce irritation, and supports better moisture retention. Microbiome-friendly skincare products play a key role in maintaining this balance and improving long-term skin resilience.
