CONCERN
Cellular health is fundamental to overall well-being, influencing energy production, immune defence, tissue repair, and cognitive performance. As we age, cellular efficiency declines, which can lead to fatigue, slower recovery, and increased sensitivity to stressors.
A central element of cellular function is mitochondrial activity. Mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s main energy source. With age, their performance tends to decrease, leading to lower energy levels and greater oxidative stress. This occurs when the production of free radicals exceeds the body’s ability to neutralise them, potentially damaging DNA, proteins, and cell membranes and accelerating biological ageing.
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) is another key factor in cellular health. This coenzyme supports energy metabolism, DNA repair, and cell survival, but its levels decline significantly with age. Supplementing with NAD⁺ precursors such as nicotinamide riboside or NMN may help restore NAD⁺ availability and support mitochondrial performance.
Pentadecanoic acid (C15:0), a trace fatty acid found in full-fat dairy, has also gained attention for its potential to strengthen cell membranes, reduce inflammation, and support metabolic and mitochondrial health, contributing to healthier ageing.
Gut health plays a vital role as well. A balanced microbiome supports immune regulation, nutrient absorption, and inflammation control. Disruption in the gut ecosystem may contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation and reduce the body’s capacity for cellular repair.
A range of external and internal stressors, including pollution, UV exposure, glycation, poor sleep, and long-term inflammation, can accelerate the decline of cellular resilience. These factors can impair mitochondrial function and increase oxidative damage, affecting tissues across the body, including the skin, brain, and muscles.
Maintaining cellular wellness calls for a proactive, whole-body approach. This includes a nutrient-dense diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, consistent sleep, and effective stress regulation. Light-based therapies, breathwork environments, and other non-invasive practices may further support circulation, tissue repair, and systemic balance. Where appropriate, nutraceuticals targeting energy production and inflammation can enhance outcomes. Personalised strategies such as biological age testing and microbiome analysis provide deeper insights and help track progress over time.
